Physician-scientist, Division Chief of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and cofounder and chief executive of Globin Solutions. Board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and critical care medicine, with more than a decade on the faculty of major academic medical centers.

Research centers on therapeutic protein engineering — designing heme-based proteins that scavenge carbon monoxide, and developing next-generation artificial oxygen carriers. Named inventor on issued and pending patents spanning therapeutic proteins, small molecules, and medical devices, and chair of NIH small-business review panels. Clinical interests span chronic lung disease, lung transplantation, and critical care.

Research & Focus

Therapeutic protein engineering: heme proteins for poisoning and oxygen delivery

Engineering recombinant neuroglobin and other heme proteins into high-affinity scavengers that pull carbon monoxide off hemoglobin and cytochrome c oxidase, reversing mitochondrial poisoning. Lead inventor on the founding reduced-heme-protein patent and developer of GSI-2001, with parallel work on heme proteins as next-generation artificial oxygen carriers.

Clinical science of carbon monoxide and inhalational toxins

Defining the outcomes, pathophysiology, and management of acute inhalational poisoning. Built analytic methods to study an unpredictable patient cohort, established outcome predictors in CO poisoning, and investigated sodium nitrite as a countermeasure to chlorine gas exposure. A recognized national authority on CO poisoning care.

EVALI and the cardiopulmonary impact of vaping

Among the first to characterize EVALI during the 2019–2020 lung-injury epidemic, publishing one of the earliest large case series and the first long-term outcomes data. Co-chaired the American Thoracic Society workshop setting national research priorities, and chaired the American Heart Association Scientific Statement on the cardiopulmonary effects of vaping.

Academic entrepreneurship and life-science commercialization

Translating discovery into companies and infrastructure. Cofounder of two startups, lead PI and executive director of UM-BILD — an NIH REACH commercialization hub — and Associate Dean reshaping the innovation ecosystem for physician-scientists pursuing therapeutic and device development.

Vascular biology and nitric oxide signaling

A research interest in vascular biology and redox chemistry, including the characterization of NO-ferroheme as a pathway for intravascular nitric oxide transport.

Chronic lung disease, inflammation, and AI/robotics in critical care

Care of patients with chronic lung disease, lung transplantation, and critical illness, including participation as a site investigator in industry-sponsored trials. Emerging interests include the application of artificial intelligence and robotics to mechanical ventilation and critical care delivery.
